Virtual event announcing the intent to apologize for the treatment of No. 2 Construction Battalion Members

Media are invited to view the live stream of a virtual event providing an update on discussions regarding the Government of Canada’s intent to apologize in a meaningful and respectful way for the treatment that members of No. 2 Construction Battalion, Canada’s only Black military unit, endured before, during, and after their service to our country during the First World War. The event will be attended by federal and provincial parliamentarians and members of the Halifax-area Black communities.

When:  Sunday, March 28, 2021. Facebook feed commences at 1:00 p.m (Eastern). Opening remarks begin at 1 p.m. Eastern (2 p.m. Atlantic time).

Where:  The ceremony will be live streamed on the DND Facebook page and imagery will be uploaded to the CAF Flickr account once available.

Sean Fraser, Member of Parliament for Central Nova, will preside over the ceremony virtually. The Honourable Harjit S. Sajjan, Minister of National Defence, will attend virtually. Other speakers will include Anita Vandenbeld, Parliamentary Secretary for National Defence, Darrell Samson, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Veterans Affairs, and Greg Fergus, Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister and Parliamentary Secretary to the President of the Treasury Board and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Digital Government. Invitees include members of the Black Battalion Historical Marker Society, members of The Black Cultural Society, and descendants of those who served in the No. 2 Construction Battalion.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions and limitations on gatherings, in-person attendance will not be permitted.

The event is coordinated in collaboration with the Black Cultural Centre for Nova Scotia.
