Operation NANOOK Media Embed Opportunities

The Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) is offering opportunities for members of the media to embark onboard Her Majesty's Canadian Ship (HMCS) Harry DeWolf during Operation NANOOK 2022, the Canadian Armed Forces' annual Arctic security and sovereignty operation.
Participants in this program will have the opportunity to sail alongside RCN sailors, in an operational setting, while experiencing the Arctic from the perspectives of Canadian sovereignty, Northern community engagement, and environmental stewardship in the naval context. During their time onboard, embarked reporters will have exclusive access to RCN sailors, Command Teams and senior Fleet leadership.

This phase will showcase how the RCN and DRDC partner to further scientific understanding of our North, and the role we have to protect it. Media embarked on this phase will also visit Pond Inlet, Nunavut; the disembarkation point; where HMC Ships' crews will conduct community relations activities. |

This phase will focus on patrolling Canada's Arctic, visiting historic sites, and observing community relations activities along the route that strengthen relationships between the northern communities and the Arctic and Offshore Patrol Ships (AOPS) and their crews. |

Details:
- Operation NANOOK is the Canadian Armed Forces' signature Arctic security and sovereignty operation in the Canadian North, that takes place every year.
- On August 2nd, 2022 HMCS Harry DeWolf, Margaret Brooke, and Goose Bay will depart Halifax to commence Operation (Op) NANOOK. The ships will be joined by allied ships from the United States, Denmark and France.
- This year will mark the first deployment of two AOPS operating together in the Canadian Arctic. Op NANOOK will see the participation of a number of NATO nations, conducting interoperability exercises. In addition to working with our allies, the RCN will support DRDC in conducting a large number of scientific trials, including on marine mammal behaviour.
- Bunks being limited, interested media must register to benefit from this opportunity. Registration will be conducted on a first-come first served basis.
- It is the responsibility of interested media to travel to and from embarking and disembarking points.
Note to Editors / News Directors:
- The RCN is not responsible for travel arrangements of media to or from the ports of embarkation or disembarkation.
- All interested media will be subject to an initial security vetting process.
- Meals and accommodations will be provided to all embarked media for the duration of their embed phase.
- A Public Affairs Officer will escort and provide support to all embedded media.
- Media must confirm their interest and preferred time slot with Lieutenant(N) Rudee Gaudet at Maritime Forces Atlantic Public Affairs. This opportunity is being offered on a first-come first-served basis. Replies are required no later than 2:00 p.m. AST on July 15, 2022.
The RCN's response to COVID-19 is aligned with direction issued by the Department of National Defence, Canadian Armed Forces and guidance provided by Public Health Authorities. As a result, the RCN will continue to closely monitor the situation, and our goal is to reinforce the importance of hygiene, physical distancing, and self-isolation for 14 days for sailors and employees who have symptoms or may have come into contact with COVID-19. All units within the RCN are following CF Health Services and Public Health guidance to the greatest extent possible in order to maintain healthy and available ships and sailors. Specific COVID-19 protocols will be provided prior to embark.
