What does a Positive Space Ambassador do?

Positive Space Ambassadors promote diversity awareness and inclusion with a focus on the 2SLGBTQI+ communities. We will look to you to speak openly and positively about gender and sexual diversity, and provide assistance to others who are dealing with 2SLGBTQI+ related topics. You will also be encouraged to self-identify as a Positive Space Ambassador by wearing and/or posting identifiers to provide visibility.

Positive Space Ambassadors are not counsellors or experts. They are peers committed to making the Defence Team a safer and more inclusive place for everyone. Ambassadors will need to balance their ambassador role with their work duties.

Why should you become an Ambassador?

As a Positive Space Ambassador, you will have the chance to learn about inclusivity, 2SLGBTQI+ topics, and promote and enable cultural growth within the Defence Team. You will also have the opportunity to hone your leadership skills and set a positive example for others. Many Ambassadors say they find the experience particularly rewarding because it offers them unique opportunities to connect with Defence Team colleagues on a personal level and to share their own experiences.

What qualifications do you need?

Any member of the Canadian Armed Forces or employee of the Department of National Defence can become a Positive Space Ambassador, regardless of rank or position.

Personal qualities that would be helpful:

We will help you fulfill your role as a Positive Space Ambassador in your workplace by providing you with Positive Space Ambassador Training. The training will help you learn how to offer support, raise awareness, and promote Positive Space in your work place. We also have resources and networks to support you.

Visit the Positive Space SharePoint site (link accessible only on the National Defence network) to register for training.

What is the time commitment?

Training is available through local bases/wings/units/Defence establishments and offered regularly, so you can choose a time and location that suits your schedule.

Beyond that, it really depends on how much time and effort you are willing to put into your role. Some Ambassadors are very active and involved in events and initiatives some are more focused on responding to requests for information and assistance.

We appreciate that being an Ambassador is an additional duty and that the amount of time people can commit will vary. Generally speaking, we are looking for people who are able to contribute consistently when performing their duties as a Positive Space Ambassador and as a member of the Defence Team by being a role model at all times.
