Description

An escutcheon Azure charged with three martlets one and two issuant from two bars wavy Argent, within an annulus Gules edged, charged in base with a mullet and inscribed LE RÉGIMENT DE JOLIETTE in letters Or, ensigned by the Royal Crown proper and encircled by a wreath of maple leaves Or, in base a beaver couchant proper set above a scroll Gules edged and inscribed with the Motto in letters Or.

Symbolism

The maple leaves and the beaver represent Canada, and the Crown, service to the Sovereign. The coat of arms at the centre is that long used by the family of Charles-François Tarieu de Lanaudière, and it links the history of the Regiment and its location in the region of Joliette. "LE RÉGIMENT DE JOLIETTE" is the regimental title and "QUEM TIMEBO?" is the motto of the regiment.

Lineage

This Reserve Force regiment originated in Joliette, Quebec on 13 January 1871, when 'The Joliette Provisional Battalion of Infantry' was authorized to be formed.Footnote 1 It was redesignated: '83rd Joliette Battalion of Infantry' on 27 December 1878;Footnote 2 '83rd Joliette Regiment' on 8 May 1900;Footnote 3 'Le Régiment de Joliette' on 29 March 1920;Footnote 4 '2nd (Reserve) Battalion, Le Régiment de Joliette' on 3 January 1942;Footnote 5 and 'Le Régiment de Joliette' on 1 June 1945.Footnote 6 It was reduced to nil strength and transferred to the Supplementary Order of Battle on 31 December 1964.Footnote 7

Notes:

Upon redesignation as Le Régiment de Joliette on 29 March 1920 (see above), it was organized as a two battalion regiment with the 1st Battalion on the Non Permanent Active Militia order of battle, and the 2nd Battalion on the Reserve order of battle. The reserve unit was disbanded on 14 December 1936 (GO 3/37).

Le Régiment de Joliette was disbanded for the purpose of reorganization on 1 March 1921 and reorganized the same day (GO 118/21). This change was administrative and does not affect the lineage of the regiment.

Operational history

The Second World War

The regiment mobilized the '1st Battalion, Le Régiment de Joliette, CASF' for active service on 3 January 1942.Footnote 8 It served in Newfoundland on garrison duty from January 1943 until February 1944.Footnote 9 On 10 January 1945 it embarked for Great Britain,Footnote 10 where it was disbanded on 19 January 1945.Footnote 11
