International materiel cooperation

As an important component of Canada’s worldwide defence relationships, the Department of National Defence pursues international materiel cooperative activities with allies and partners. These cooperative activities enhance interoperability and facilitate the efficient delivery of the defence Materiel Acquisition and Support (MA&S) program. The MA&S program is the acquisition (excluding the identification of the requirement), support, and disposal of the materiel component of a defence capability.

A Defence Materiel Cooperation Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) is the mechanism through which National Defence pursues international defence materiel cooperative activities with foreign allies and partners. These MOUs are practical documents that facilitate the development of joint common equipment requirements, the provision of mutual logistic and materiel support, and the exchange of defence technical, operational and equipment-related information, for materiel and personnel. They are based on the principles of shared interest and reciprocity.
