July 16, 2019 – Mississauga, Ontario
Canada’s steel industry is a key contributor to the Canadian economy, providing well-paying jobs across Canada.
Today, the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for FedDev Ontario, announced an investment of up to $515,000 for Mississauga-based Pittsburgh Steel Group.
With this funding, Pittsburgh Steel Group will be able to purchase and install leading-edge robotics technology and adopt sophisticated new production monitoring software to improve its operations. This investment will support the company’s growth by boosting its productivity and competitiveness, while creating and maintaining seven good jobs in Mississauga.
This project is funded through the more than $39 million allocated for southern Ontario under the Regional Economic Growth through Innovation (REGI) Steel and Aluminum Initiative, announced in March 2019.
Delivered by Canada’s regional development agencies (RDAs), these non-repayable contributions will support Canada’s small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the steel and aluminum sectors that are innovating to succeed and create jobs.
“Canada’s steel and aluminum companies are adapting to get ahead of the curve, and in our government, they have a partner they can count on. By helping these small- and medium-sized businesses innovate and adopt new technologies, we’re helping them succeed and create good jobs for Canadians.”
— The Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario
“The small- and medium-sized businesses in our steel industry are important contributors to the economic vitality of communities across the country. Small- and medium-sized businesses are the backbone of our economy, and by investing in their success, we are investing in the success of all Canadians.”
— The Honourable Mary Ng, Minister of Small Business and Export Promotion
“Pittsburgh Steel Group greatly appreciates this FedDev Ontario support, allowing us to invest in new technology which will innovate our process line and expand our production capabilities. With improved productivity and competitiveness, we will add to the economic betterment of our community by creating skilled jobs and reducing waste for a healthier environment.”
— Zoran Radonjic, President, Pittsburgh Steel Group
Pittsburgh Steel Group provides structural steel drafting, fabrication and installation of custom steel products.
In 2018, Canada’s steel and aluminum producers employed more than 33,500 Canadians and contributed $8.9 billion to Canada’s gross domestic product.
Regional development agencies are one of Canada’s four flagship platforms supporting innovation, along with the Industrial Research Assistance Program, the Strategic Innovation Fund and the Canadian Trade Commissioner Service.
The REGI program builds on the objectives of the Innovation and Skills Plan by providing regionally tailored, nationally consistent support for business productivity and scale-up and by helping enhance regional technology clusters and innovation ecosystems.
