FedDev Ontario supports food processor in Mississauga

News release

Over $1 million to help frozen pastry manufacturer scale up operations, expand to new markets and create 15 new jobs

September 6, 2019 — Mississauga, Ontario

Today, Iqra Khalid, Member of Parliament for Mississauga–Erin Mills, announced a FedDev Ontario contribution of over $1 million to Trio Bakery Inc., a manufacturer of freezer-to-oven filled pastries, widely known as burek pies, to create the only fully automated burek pie production facility in North America. This announcement was made on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for FedDev Ontario.

With FedDev Ontario’s contribution, Trio Bakery Inc. will retrofit a recently acquired 18,900-square-foot facility in Mississauga with advanced equipment, including a fully automated production line. Trio Bakery Inc. anticipates that the automated production line will increase production from 313 pies (made by hand) to 4,200 pies in a day. The facility improvements will promote sustainability and minimize environmental impact by employing energy-efficient equipment and processes that reduce waste and water usage.

As well as adding 15 full-time manufacturing jobs in Mississauga, Trio Bakery Inc. expects to positively impact the local supply chain by purchasing ingredients and packaging from businesses in the Peel and Halton regions. With increased efficiency, Trio Bakery Inc. will also be better-positioned to diversify its export markets and compete outside of Canada.

This project supports the Government of Canada’s Economic Strategy Tables on Agri-Food and Advanced Manufacturing. It also aligns with the Innovation and Skills Plan priority of investing in scale-up firms and assisting businesses to become more competitive and innovative, to create jobs and to pursue export markets.

“I am pleased that Trio Bakery Inc. has chosen to operate its state-of-the-art food processing facility in Mississauga. With FedDev Ontario support, the company is scaling its production capacity to be the leader in burek pie manufacturing across North America, while also creating good-paying jobs in the region, and strengthening both the local workforce and supply chain.”
- Iqra Khalid, Member of Parliament for Mississauga–Erin Mills

“The Government of Canada remains committed to supporting food manufacturers that invest in innovation, adopt new automation processes and increase their exports. This FedDev Ontario funding will help to strengthen Trio Bakery Inc.’s market position and export competitiveness across North America.”
- The Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario

“On behalf of our partners, I would like to express our gratitude to FedDev Ontario and the Government of Canada for its support of Trio Bakery and of all Ontario food manufacturers. This funding will give us the ability to scale up operations at our fully automated borek pie production facility, one of its kind in North America, expand to new markets and create new Canadian jobs. This funding plays a crucial role in the growth of our business and our ability to penetrate new markets. We are deeply grateful for the opportunities this funding will provide our business. I would also like to encourage other small business owners to reach out to government as they are truly here to bolster our organizations and our economy.”
- Jacqueline Janosevic, President, Trio Bakery Inc.
