FedDev Ontario supports food processor in Mississauga

News release

Over $1 million to help frozen pastry manufacturer scale up operations, expand to new markets and create 15 new jobs

September 6, 2019 — Mississauga, Ontario

Today, Iqra Khalid, Member of Parliament for Mississauga–Erin Mills, announced a FedDev Ontario contribution of over $1 million to Trio Bakery Inc., a manufacturer of freezer-to-oven filled pastries, widely known as burek pies, to create a fully automated burek pie production facility in Mississauga. This announcement was made on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for FedDev Ontario.

With FedDev Ontario’s contribution, Trio Bakery Inc. will retrofit a recently acquired 18,900-square-foot facility in Mississauga with advanced equipment, including a fully automated production line. Trio Bakery Inc. anticipates that the automated production line will increase production from 313 pies (made by hand) to 4,200 pies in a day. The facility improvements will promote sustainability and minimize environmental impact by employing energy-efficient equipment and processes that reduce waste and water usage.

As well as adding 15 full-time manufacturing jobs in Mississauga, Trio Bakery Inc. expects to positively impact the local supply chain by purchasing ingredients and packaging from businesses in the Peel and Halton regions. With increased efficiency, Trio Bakery Inc. will also be better-positioned to diversify its export markets and compete outside of Canada.

This project supports the Government of Canada’s Economic Strategy Tables on Agri-Food and Advanced Manufacturing. It also aligns with the Innovation and Skills Plan priority of investing in scale-up firms and assisting businesses to become more competitive and innovative, to create jobs and to pursue export markets.
