Government of Canada supports Northern Transformer’s Innisfil expansion

News release

$6-million investment in new facility to expand domestic transformer production and strengthen national energy security

September 18, 2025 – Innisfil, Ontario

Electricity grids across the country are undergoing a historic wave of investment, driven by population and economic growth, aging infrastructure, and ever-increasing demand for electricity. Large power transformers (LPTs) are important for maintaining and upgrading the nation's power grid, supporting economic growth and urbanization, enabling the transition to renewable energy, and ensuring national energy security. That is why the Government of Canada is investing in modernizing our energy infrastructure, to ensure Canadians have the power they need for a thriving future economy and society.

Today, the Honourable Evan Solomon, Minister of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Innovation and Minister responsible for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario), announced an investment of $6 million for Northern Transformer Corporation, a leading manufacturer of high-voltage power transformers, as the company breaks ground for a new state-of-the-art Large Power Transformer (LPT) facility in Innisfil, Ontario.

With this investment, Northern Transformer will equip its new 183,000-square-foot LPT facility with critical machinery to increase transformer production capabilities and strengthen the company’s position in the local power supply chain. The new facility, expected to be open in 2028, will enable the company to meet increased market demand from utilities for high-quality, reliable and timely power transformers to support grid modernization and electrification initiatives across North America.

It will also create skilled jobs in Simcoe County, while positioning Ontario as a leader in advanced energy manufacturing. The facility is being delivered through partnerships with HydroOne, the Government of Ontario through Invest Ontario, the Ministry of Energy and Electrification, the Town of Innisfil and the County of Simcoe.

By expanding Canada’s ability to build critical transformers at home, we are strengthening Canada’s national energy security and ensuring the grid can support the country’s needs for decades to come.
