Backgrounder

The New Horizons for Seniors Program is a federal grants and contributions program that funds projects that empower seniors in their communities and contribute to improving seniors’ health and well-being.

Canada has announced an investment of $266,159 to fund 12 community-based projects to support seniors in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. This funding was awarded through the 2021–22 New Horizons for Seniors Program call for proposals for community-based projects.

Positive Aging Series: Life Enrichment 55 to 105 – $23,807 – Saskatoon Council on Aging Inc.

Seniors involved with the organization will take part in positive ageing workshops to navigate future life changes in order to support the social participation and inclusion of seniors.

Reconnecting Our Community – $25,000 – Bethany Manor

Seniors involved with the organization will run various workshops and activities in order to support the social participation and inclusion of seniors.

Seniors with disabilities communicating with technology – $18,982 – North Saskatchewan Independent Living Centre

The organization will purchase adaptive equipment and iPads to offer computer literacy workshops in order to support the social participation and inclusion of seniors.

Round Prairie Elders Lodge - Indigenous Elder Support – $25,000 – Central Urban Metis Federation, Inc.

Seniors involved with the organization will attend a financial literacy forum, learn navigation tips, and attend a weekly check-in, in order to support the social participation and inclusion of seniors

Online Fire and Fall Prevention Training – $25,000 – City of Saskatoon

Seniors involved with the organization will develop online material to teach seniors how to prevent falls in order to support the social participation and inclusion of seniors.

All Our Relations: Indigenous Elder Mentors – $25,000 – The University of Saskatchewan

Seniors involved in the organization will facilitate learning workshops focused on Indigenous identity in order to engage seniors in the community through the mentoring of others.

Enhancing Life Virtually – $25,000 – Samaritan Place

The organization will purchase projectors and screens for dining rooms to continue to offer social stimulation and participation in order to support the social participation and inclusion of seniors.

Then and Now: The Twinning Project – $18,050 – Saskatoon Open Door Society

The organization will purchase props and clothing to offer programming in the community in order to support the social participation and inclusion of seniors.

Connecting Our Seniors – $25,000 – Sherbrooke Community Centre

Seniors involved with the organization will purchase devices to teach seniors digital literacy for improved communication in order to support the social participation and inclusion of seniors.

Lights on Greens – $13,320 – Mayfair Lawn Bowling Club

The organization will purchase a new lighting system to continue to offer lawn bowling with increased visibility and accessibility in order to support the social participation and inclusion of seniors.

Bringing Seniors Together: Pickleball in Saskatoon – $17,000 – SPI or Pickleball Saskatoon Inc.

The organization will purchase pickleball equipment to continue to offer and introduce pickleball sports to seniors in order to support the social participation and inclusion of seniors.

Eco Appliance Upgrade – $25,000 – Saskatoon Legion

The organization will purchase new energy-efficient appliances to continue to offer a space for community seniors in order to support the social participation and inclusion of seniors.
