From: Employment and Social Development Canada
Official title: Summary of the Canada’s Volunteer Awards 2019 Exemplary Practices Report: Triumphs and Challenges of Volunteering in the Age of Covid-19
Award recipients and members of volunteer organizations meet to talk about their experiences and best practices based on a theme. The 2019 theme was broadening our understanding of volunteering to reduce barriers and increase diversity and engagement. Participants also talked about what it meant to volunteer during Covid-19.
2019 Exemplary practices session
The virtual session took place in November 2020.
Participants looked at reasons why people might not volunteer. They tried to find ways to attract different groups of people and communities to volunteer. They also noted that Covid-19 showed some areas where changes are possible. The participants discussed:
- under represented groups:
- who are they
- what stops them from volunteering
- how do we encourage and support them
- changing how we think about volunteering:
- creating and identifying more ways for people to participate
- the volunteer spectrum:
- growing as a volunteer from an informed person to a leader
- informal volunteering:
- how do we show its value
- encouraging teamwork across sectors:
- how can groups work together to help each other
