Minister McKenna Recognizes Quebec for Action on Climate Change

“The Province of Quebec has long been a leader in climate change action. Quebec’s diligence on the issue of climate change was clear through its collaboration with California in establishing the largest carbon market in North America, and the first ever designed and operated by subnational governments of different countries. This scale of measure brought to light the kind of imagination and ingenuity Canada will need to address climate change.

“Quebec’s announcement today of these additional measures in advance of the start of COP21 is a testament to Canada’s capacity to transform our approach to the environment and climate change.

“Canada commends Quebec’s resolve to address climate change, and looks forward to working together on these shared priorities. Canada will support our communities and our economy by making significant new investments in green infrastructure and clean technologies, and will also ensure that the provinces and territories have the flexibility to design their own carbon pricing policies.

“Climate change is one of the greatest threats of our time. The Government of Canada is ready to provide national leadership—to roll up our sleeves and work with our provincial and territorial partners—to find creative and effective solutions to address climate change.”
