World Circular Economy Forum 2020

Backgrounder

Created in 2017, the World Circular Economy Forum is the global initiative of Finland and the Finnish innovation fund Sitra. The Forum was first held in Finland, in 2017; Japan, in 2018; and again in Finland, in 2019.

Canada will host the World Circular Economy Forum—from September 29 to October 1, 2020—in Toronto, marking the first time the international forum will take place in North America. By gathering global circular-economy leaders in Canada, the Forum will open up important discussions on circular-economy opportunities in the natural resource and manufacturing sectors, on leveraging business innovation and clean technology, and on circular solutions contributing to the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Canada will raise awareness of successful circular approaches in our communities, highlight business innovation and clean-technology solutions, and introduce the concept of the circular economy to a wider Canadian audience. The Forum will demonstrate Canadian leadership, innovation, and talent, working to advance circularity on the world stage and provide a platform for current and emerging international circular-economy leaders to share their expertise. For businesses, research organizations, and academia, the event will be an opportunity to showcase technologies, find new markets, and meet world-class innovators and investors.

The World Circular Economy Forum 2020 will be co-organized by Environment and Climate Change Canada, on behalf of the Government of Canada, and Sitra. Forum partners include the Circular Economy Leadership Coalition, the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, the European Commission, the Government of Finland, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, the Platform for Accelerating the Circular Economy, the United Nations Environment Programme, and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development.

Forum details will be available in the coming months at Canada.ca.
