Risk management strategy for products containing mercury: chapter 6


The risk management objective is to reduce mercury releases to the environment from consumer products to the lowest possible level by:

  • prohibiting, or limiting where appropriate, mercury content in new consumer products; and,
  • preventing releases from end-of-life mercury-containing products.

The extent of the reduction of mercury in each product category will be based on the technical and economic feasibility of reducing or substituting mercury, the environmental impact of alternative products and current actions addressing mercury in products (e.g. Canada-wide Standards).
