Implementation of species changes: 16th Conference of the Parties

The 16th Conference of the Parties (CoP16) to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) made decisions to add or modify the Appendix listings for 78 species or groups of species when it met in March 2013.

After CoP16, Canada placed a temporary reservation on all the CoP16 listing decisions to allow time to reflect the CoP changes in its domestic regulations. The temporary reservation ensured that Canada remained in compliance with the Convention while the necessary regulatory amendments were undertaken. Canada continued to be supportive of all the CoP16 decisions and actively communicated with exporters and importers to ensure CITES requirements could be demonstrated.

On April 1, 2015, Canada’s domestic regulations, Schedule 1 of the Wild Animal and Plant Trade Regulations (WAPTR) were updated with all the CoP16 listing decisions. The CITES Parties were informed on June 8, 2015 that the reservation was lifted with Notification 2015/034 (Notifications to the Parties). The full list of CITES species regulated in Canada is available under Species List on our website (CITES Species List).
