Summary of public comments received on the draft screening assessment - Alkyl imizadolines group

Comments on the Draft Screening Assessment (dSAR) for Alkyl Imizadolines Group, assessed under the Chemicals Management Plan (CMP), were submitted by an individual.

Summarized public comments and responses are provided below.

Biodegradability

Summarized comment Summarized response
Imidazoline substances might not degrade completely and may biotransform into more toxic intermediates. The approach to characterise ecological concerns with the substances in this group considers a range of information such as half-life and bioaccumulation potential. However, since the exposure potential is low, the substances are identified as presenting a low ecological concern and there was no further investigation of environmental fate and toxicity for the environmental degradation products. From a human health perspective, given the low potential exposure, there was no further investigation of biotransformation products.
A detailed study on the steps of reaction used to synthesize chemicals in the alkyl imidazoline group should be carried out to confirm the non toxicity of alkyl imidazolines. The focus of the screening assessment is on the specified substances that were identified as priorities for assessment. Risk characterization of impurities that may result from the manufacturing process of each substance is outside the scope of this screening assessment. No manufacturing activity was reported in Canada.
