A RADARSAT-2 satellite image taken on February 1-2, 2014, of Smith Sound. The image highlights the North Water Polynia, which is a recurring area of open water surrounded by sea ice. It is the largest in the Artic and is an important refuge for wildlife. Also shown is fast ice along Devon Island and medium first-year ice in the northwestern part of Baffin Bay.
