Share and view ideas:Consultation addressing plastic waste and pollution from the textile and apparel sector
Current status: Closed
Opened on July 4, 2024 and will close to new input on September 1, 2024.
Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has prepared a consultation document to solicit feedback on the key elements of a proposed roadmap for addressing plastic waste and pollution from the textile and apparel sector. This could include the actions undertaken by different levels of government as well as industry, academia and civil society.
Who is the focus of this consultation
We would like to engage with:
- Representatives from provincial, territorial and municipal governments
- Indigenous groups
- Industry
- Environmental group
- Public advocacy groups
- Canadians
Key questions for discussion
The proposed roadmap will outline and describe key issues for Canadian textile and apparel circularity. It will also outline potential solutions to these key issues to increase the circularity of the textile and apparel industry through actions that make the most difference for the environment over the long-term. It will identify who is best-placed to deliver solutions among different levels of government, industry, and other stakeholders. It will also identify at which points in the waste management hierarchy and along the textile value chain the solutions would be applied.
Ideas and input are being sought around themes/topics:
- Determining and quantifying the sources of textiles and apparel waste and pollution
- Extending the life of a textile or apparel product (e.g., durability, reuse, repair)
- Textile and apparel waste management
- Limited textile and apparel recycling in Canada
- Microfibre pollution
