Chignecto National Wildlife Area

Chignecto National Wildlife Area (NWA) is 3km west of the town of Amherst in Nova Scotia. Created in 1982, it provides habitat for birds and other wildlife.

The NWA has unique geology and many different habitats. Habitats include freshwater reservoirs, sinkhole ponds, forest and old fields. These habitats are important for birds. The NWA supports over 228 bird species. Rare species such as the barn swallow and bobolink are thought to occur in the NWA as well.

The NWA is listed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature as a Category VI protected area. It is protected for species preservation, genetic diversity, and scientific monitoring and research.

Chignecto NWA is a popular spot for bird watching, recreation, and relaxation. Visitors can use a parking lot and 3.5km of access trails during the summer. The NWA is part of the Connecting Canadians to Nature (CCN) initiative. CCN helps Canadians enjoy and connect with nature. Funding will improve visitor services.

NWAs are protected and managed under the Canada Wildlife Act. This management plan pairs with protection provided for existing Aboriginal or treaty rights.
