Biographical summary of report writers
Andrew Read who prepared the earlier 2003 status report is the Rachel Carson Chair of Marine Conservation Biology at Duke University, in Beaufort, NC, USA. Dr. Read received his Ph.D. from the University of Guelph in 1990 for research conducted on the life history and bycatches of harbour porpoises in the Bay of Fundy. He has conducted research on porpoises in Canada, Mexico, the United States, South America and Europe since 1981. He is a member of the Scientific Committee of the International Whaling Commission and Cetacean Specialist Group of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). He has served as chair of the IWC-ASCOBANS Working Group on Harbour Porpoises, on two Harbour Porpoise Take Reduction Teams in the U.S. and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) Harbour Porpoise Advisory Team in Canada. He also serves on the editorial boards of Marine Mammal Science and the Journal of Cetacean Research and Management. Dr. Read is the author of over 50 journal articles on the ecology and conservation of porpoises and dolphins and author, or editor, of three books on the harbour porpoise.
Randall Reeves is a Co-chair of the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC) Marine Mammals Specialist Subcommittee and a cetacean expert who lives in Hudson, QC.
