Habitat requirements

Shumard Oak is a component of the Deciduous Forest Region of Canada. Itrequires rich, moist, poorly-drained clay and clay loam soil in deciduous woods or alone fencerows (Waldron, 1984). The forest canopy should be relatively open to permit regeneration (Waldron et al., 1987).

Protection/ownership

Two Shumard Oak populations occur in conservation areas in Essex County and another occurs in a conservation area in Kent County, however, most sites occur on private property or along road allowances.
