The Spotted Owl is among the most studied bird species in the world because of its association with commercially valuable old coniferous forests (GutiƩrrez et al. 1995). It has become a high-profile species with the public and the media in Canada and the United States because it is the focus of much controversy between those concerned with the health of old forest ecosystems and those who want economic development of those forests.
