Government of Canada Investments Support Infrastructure, Tourism and the Thunder Bay’s Francophone Community
Backgrounder
The Government of Canada funding announced today is provided through the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program (CIP 150) and FedNor’s Youth Internship Initiative. The CIP 150 program is designed to leave a lasting legacy in communities across the country by supporting improvements to community infrastructure that provide community and cultural benefits for the public. FedNor’s Youth Internship Initiative helps post-secondary graduates get crucial work experience, while also helping Northern Ontario businesses and organizations access educated and motivated young people to help support their goals.
Thunder Bay International Baseball Association
$100,000
The Government of Canada is providing $100,000 in CIP 150 funding to support enhancements to Thunder Bay’s Baseball Central facility in preparation for the upcoming World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) Under 18 Baseball World Cup. Taking place between September 1st and 10th, the event will attract teams from 12 nations. This FedNor investment will help with upgrades to the field and turf, drainage and lighting systems, and fencing.
The Coalition for Waverley Park
$95,500
A Government of Canada investment of $95,500, provided through CIP 150, will enable the construction of a multipurpose pavilion on the foundation of the former band shell in Waverley Park. The pavilion design will be in keeping with the time period of the park, which received its designated parkland status in 1871. The pavilion will be available for the enjoyment of all, and events held at the pavilion will help attract tourists to the Waverley Park heritage area.
Lakehead Region Conservation Authority
$47,769
In celebration of Canada's 150th anniversary of Confederation, a CIP 150 investment of $47,769 will enable the Lakehead Region Conservation Authority (LRCA) to upgrade and enhance its trails, and install a new historical interpretive panel. Enhancements to the trail system will include the paving of 480m of existing trails, and the resurfacing of 105m of existing paved trails.
Regroupement des organismes francophones de Thunder Bay Inc.
$31,500
A Government of Canada investment of $31,500, through FedNor’s Youth Internship Initiative, will enable the Regroupement des organismes francophones de Thunder Bay Inc. to hire a youth intern for a one-year period. The intern’s responsibilities will include updating the organization’s three-year strategic plan, developing and implementing a marketing plan for the new Francophone multi-service centre, planning and coordinating a business and career fair, and assisting with the planning of a festival. Located at 234 Van Norman Street, the new Francophone centre is home to six local Francophone organizations offering various services to the citizens of Thunder Bay, as well as several spaces available for meetings and events.
