Backgrounder
The funding announced today is provided through FedNor’s Northern Ontario Development Program, which support projects that promote sustainable community economic development, enhance business development and growth, and facilitate innovation throughout the region.
Canadore College
$1,436,500
The Village
$1,000,000
A FedNor investment of $1 million will enable Canadore College to purchase and install state-of-the-art equipment and information communications technology infrastructure for its soon-to-be-completed Village complex. The first of its kind in Canada, this 38,000-square-foot facility will serve as an innovative educational, research and healthcare centre that will blend instructional and practical learning. Designed to integrate Indigenous, Eastern and Western health and wellness practices into one cohesive setting, the Village will focus on collaboration between health care providers, students and researchers. Once fully operational, the Village will also include an Aging Person Hub, a centre of excellence for applied research in healthy aging and personal wellness that will increase college and industry collaboration on research and development projects.
Responsive Innovation
$405,000
To maximize economic opportunities, support advanced manufacturing and create middle-class jobs, a FedNor investment of $405,000 will enable Canadore College to implement its responsive innovation project. This three-year initiative will help engage businesses and organizations by connecting industry with academic staff, laboratory facilities, student researchers and technology assistants to undertake various research projects. Each project will have an emphasis on product design or development, process improvements, market-driven problem resolution, as well as prototype development and testing.
Youth Intern
$31,500
A Government of Canada investment of $31,500 through FedNor helped support technology, innovation and skills-training, while creating youth employment in the Nipissing–Timiskaming region. Specifically the FedNor funding enabled Canadore College to hire a youth intern for a one-year period. While on the job, the intern helped deliver the college’s Innovation Centre for Advanced Manufacturing and Production (I-CAMP) Talent Solution, a program that connects recent graduates with employers so they can gain hands-on advanced skills training, while working with state-of-the-art equipment to identify innovative business solutions to real-world issues.
