Government of Canada invests to encourage innovative practices and public-private sector collaborative projects at Canadore College
September 21, 2018 – North Bay, ON – Federal Economic Development Initiative for Northern Ontario - FedNor
Entrepreneurs, organizations, communities and youth from across the region will benefit from innovative educational, research, healthcare and business opportunities thanks to a Government of Canada investment of nearly $1.5 million in support of three strategic initiatives led by Canadore College.
The announcement was made today by Anthony Rota, Member of Parliament for Nipissing–Timiskaming, on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development, and Minister responsible for FedNor. These targeted investments are in line with Canada’s Innovation and Skills Plan, as well as the federal government’s Prosperity and Growth Strategy for Northern Ontario.
The FedNor funding announced today will enable Canadore College to purchase equipment and support information communications technology infrastructure for its soon-to-be-completed Village complex. The funding will also support youth employment and allow the college to implement its responsive innovation initiative.

The funding announced today is provided through FedNor’s Northern Ontario Development Program, which supports projects that promote sustainable community economic development, enhance business development and growth, and facilitate innovation throughout the region.

The Prosperity and Growth Strategy for Northern Ontario outlines the Government of Canada’s approach to ensure the region can fully benefit from the national Innovation and Skills Plan. It is focused on three key economic development areas: Growing companies; Supporting innovation; and Building stronger communities.

Budget 2018 provided an additional $511 million over five years to the regional development agencies to support the national Innovation and Skills Plan. As part of this total, FedNor is being allocated $28 million over five years. This is in addition to the $25 million over five years it received in Budget 2017.
