News release

Federal funding to support innovation, expand digital programming and create five local high-skilled jobs

November 30, 2022 – Sudbury, ON – Federal Economic Development Agency for Northern Ontario – FedNor

A key part of Canada’s economic recovery plans includes supporting businesses as they adapt, grow and move forward.. Now more than ever, businesses and organizations have had to innovate and look for other ways to create more value-added connections with their community and members.

Today, Viviane Lapointe, Member of Parliament for Sudbury, announced a FedNor investment of $263,755 to assist Place des Arts in adopting new digital technology which will strengthen its capacity to offer more cultural experiences in both official languages for the Greater Sudbury community. The announcement was made on behalf of the Honourable Patty Hajdu, Minister of Indigenous Services and Minister responsible for FedNor, and was also supported by Marc G. Serré, Member of Parliament for Nickel Belt and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Official Languages.

The FedNor funding provided through the Jobs and Growth Fund (JGF) will enable Place des Arts to purchase special equipment to update its website capabilities including the ability to live stream entertainment to larger and newer audiences in both English and French. The enhanced online presence will increase public participation by offering a wider variety of entertainment choices for spectators in person and remotely. The new technology will also increase revenue and allow the centre to continue providing quality, accessible programming, while contributing to the local economy. Place des Arts expects to live stream up to 50 shows to 50,000 online participants annually. This initiative will create five high-skilled jobs associated with the digital delivery of events and support the long-term success of the organization.

This investment supports the Government of Canada’s Action Plan for Official Languages “2018-2023: Investing in Our Future.” The Action Plan lays out a broad vision of a strong Canadian Francophonie and a bilingualism that encourages exchange and recognizes our English and French linguistic heritage.
