Atlantic Science Enterprise Centre

Backgrounder

As part of the Government of Canada’s commitment to ocean science, Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) is investing in the development of two science enterprise centres – one in Moncton, New Brunswick, and one in Vancouver – to ensure we have the best available science to effectively protect and manage Canada’s aquatic resources. The Moncton site, the Atlantic Science Enterprise Centre (ASEC), will drive scientific research partnerships, promote community engagement and ocean literacy, build a culture of sustainability, excellence and continuous innovation, and actively focus on ecological knowledge systems.

ASEC will be a multi-partner research facility, equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructure, tools and networks in the pursuit of world-class scientific research.

It will foster partnerships with the scientific and academic communities, Indigenous peoples, business groups, the fishing industry, government partners, non-government organizations and the public. ASEC will work with partner organizations to develop dynamic interpretative spaces in order to share coastal science and discuss coastal issues with the public.

The Atlantic Science Enterprise Centre is also introducing a new public lecture series: Science 360̊.
Following the Chief Science Advisor to the Government of Canada, Mona Nemer’s conference on November 14, 2018, the featured speakers for the upcoming months are:

January 23, 2019 – Université de Moncton professor of environmental chemistry, Dr. Céline Surette

February 27, 2019 – Restigouche River Watershed Management Council, Science Advisory Committee Chair,
Dr. Carole-Anne Gillis

March 27, 2019 – Canadian Whale Institute Researcher, Dr. Moira Brown

All lecture are open to the public and tickets are free and available through the Capitol Theatre box office in Moncton, N.B. Simultaneous translation is available in both official languages.
