Ministers Wilkinson and Lebouthillier to visit the Magdalen Islands

Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard, the Honourable Jonathan Wilkinson, along with the Honourable Diane Lebouthillier, Minister of National Revenue and MP for Gaspésie—Les Îles-de-la-Madeleine, will be visiting the Magdalen Islands on Tuesday, January 15, 2019 to meet with local fishing industry stakeholders and discuss priorities to support the local economy and the archipelago’s way of life.
The ocean is present in of every aspect of island life. Both recreational and commercial fishing are woven into the fabric of daily life and the culture of the local people. Consequently, Ministers Wilkinson and Lebouthillier look forward to using this opportunity to listen and discuss the primary industry of the Magdalen Islands - its fisheries. Across the region, this industry employs approximately 15% of the local population. .
The Ministers are pleased to be meeting with, among others, the Mayor of les Îles-de-la-Madeleine, Jonathan Lapierre, as well as members of the local lobster, crab and seal industries.
The Ministers will also take the opportunity to meet the staff at the Department of Fisheries and Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard. Lastly, the Ministers will tour a site where human-made climate change is impacting the local coastal environment.
Over $39.4 million has recently been invested in small craft harbours across Quebec, including the region of Gaspésie–Les Îles-de-la-Madeleine. Media are invited to take part in a tour of the small craft harbour of l’Étang-du-Nord.
