MP Fisher joins fishery officers during Marine Mammal Response Training in Bedford Basin

Dartmouth, Nova Scotia — Member of Parliament for Dartmouth-Cole Harbour, Darren Fisher, joined fishery officers during the on-water portion of their Marine Mammal Response Training in the Bedford Basin.

Under the Ocean’s Protection Plan, fishery officers from across the country are trained to support their partners during disentanglements of marine mammals. This training allows fishery officers to learn about the equipment used during disentanglements and to practice attaching a satellite tag to an entangled whale. The training features a classroom component, on-water exercises, and on-land radio training to simulate locating satellite tags placed on marine mammals.

It is important that fishery officers are trained to be able to provide support to our partners during these sensitive situations. This week, 32 fishery officers will become fully trained to provide this type of support.
