Minister Dion marks International Religious Freedom Day

Statement

October 27, 2016 - Ottawa, Ontario - Global Affairs Canada

The Honourable Stéphane Dion, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today marked International Religious Freedom Day with the following statement:

“Freedom of religion or belief, including the ability to worship in peace and security, is a universal human right. It is protected by the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and is enshrined in both the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, among other key human rights documents.

“The struggle for religious freedom is, at its heart, a struggle for the universal and inseparable freedoms Canadians cherish, and that is why the Government of Canada established the Office of Human Rights, Freedoms and Inclusion earlier this year. The new office brings the championing, protection and promotion of religious freedom under a comprehensive vision that includes all human rights.

“In many parts of the world, people continue to face repression or persecution on the basis of their religion or beliefs. Discrimination against religious and belief communities, as with all forms of discrimination, causes human suffering, spreads division and contributes to a climate of fear, intolerance and stigmatization, especially true in Syria and Iraq today.

“As a multi-ethnic, multi-faith and inclusive society, Canada’s constructive engagement in the world includes working with partners to enhance the international promotion and protection of freedom of religion or belief, as well as championing inclusion and respect for diversity and human rights.

“I look forward to meeting next week with the UN Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Religion or Belief designate, Ahmed Shaheed, and discussing how we may work together to address the challenges various religious and belief communities and organizations are facing around the world.”
