Announcements by Minister Dion during visit to Peru

During his trip to Peru, Minister Dion made the following announcements:

$19.8 million for education and rights of marginalized teenagers in Peru, in collaboration with UNICEF

This seven-year project aims to help the most vulnerable teenagers in Peru, particularly Indigenous girls, fully exercise their rights and reach their full potential. It aims to improve the secondary education system so that it is better adapted to the needs of marginalized youth. Teenagers’ health and protection services will also be enhanced to ensure the right conditions for learning.

$15 million for modernizing Peru’s public service

This seven-year project provides technical assistance for the development and implementation of a modern human resources management system for the public service. The goal is improve the delivery of basic public services country-wide, ensuring they reach the most vulnerable populations, including women and Indigenous communities, and reduce extreme poverty. The project also aims to contribute to gender equality, pluralism and non-discrimination.

Entry into force of the Convention on Social Security between Canada and Peru

The Convention, which will enter into force on March 1, 2017, will help persons in Canada and Peru to qualify for pension benefits. It will also result in direct savings for Canadian companies operating in Peru since they will no longer be required to pay social security contributions to the Peruvian pension system on behalf of their Canadian employees. This will promote investment and trade.

$15.3 million for Safe Food for Growth (SAFEGRO) in Vietnam

This project, taking place from 2017 to 2024, aims to improve the performance of national and sub-national governments in enforcing food safety regulations to meet international standards. It also aims to improve economic opportunities for farmers and women, as well as agri-food actors supplying safe food, and enhance consumer demand for safe and affordable agri-food in Vietnam.
