The Honourable Stéphane Dion, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today made the following statement on Colombia’s new peace agreement:

“Canada welcomes the announcement of a revised peace deal between the Government of Colombia and FARC [Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia]. After six weeks of sustained efforts, the new agreement strives to combine the desire for justice with the need for peace.

‎“We congratulate President Juan Manuel Santos and his negotiating team for having carefully listened to the concerns of Colombians and taken them into account in building a new path forward. All parties are to be commended for their enormous commitment and hard work to date to achieve ‎a new agreement to address these concerns.

“This agreement is a major step forward, giving renewed hope to Colombians and the international community that a final, just and durable peace is attainable.

“Canada continues to be a steadfast partner for the Government of Colombia and all Colombians as they move forward to implement lasting and durable peace. Our ongoing investments in development and peacebuilding in Colombia‎ will continue in this spirit.”
