November 13, 2016 - Ottawa, Ontario - Global Affairs Canada
The Honourable Stéphane Dion, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today made the following statement on Colombia’s new peace agreement:
“Canada welcomes the announcement of a revised peace deal between the Government of Colombia and FARC [Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia]. After six weeks of sustained efforts, the new agreement strives to combine the desire for justice with the need for peace.
“We congratulate President Juan Manuel Santos and his negotiating team for having carefully listened to the concerns of Colombians and taken them into account in building a new path forward. All parties are to be commended for their enormous commitment and hard work to date to achieve a new agreement to address these concerns.
“This agreement is a major step forward, giving renewed hope to Colombians and the international community that a final, just and durable peace is attainable.
“Canada continues to be a steadfast partner for the Government of Colombia and all Colombians as they move forward to implement lasting and durable peace. Our ongoing investments in development and peacebuilding in Colombia will continue in this spirit.”
