Funding for Canada's integrated support to Tunisia
Backgrounder
Canada today announced that it will provide funding for temporary and integrated support to Tunisia in order to better align Canada’s actions in the country through development and security projects, for a total value of $24 million over four years.
The new development component of this support, totalling $20 million, focuses on projects that will address the socio-economic empowering of vulnerable populations, notably women and girls, green and sustainable economic growth, and inclusive and responsible governance.
The security component includes projects valued at $4 million that were announced in May 2016 by the Honourable Stéphane Dion, Minister of Foreign Affairs. These projects are funded by the Counter‑Terrorism Capacity Building Program (CTCBP) and are aimed at stabilizing the country and fighting terrorism. More specifically, these projects focus on:
- border security to limit the movement of foreign terrorist fighters;
- the need to combat the financing of terrorism; and
- community resilience against violent extremism.
Canada is determined to provide support to Tunisia as it addresses its socio-economic and security challenges, and to continue down its path toward becoming a pluralistic democracy.
