Minister Bibeau to visit Haiti to see extent of Hurricane Matthew damage and to visit development and humanitarian assistance projects

The Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister of International Development and La Francophonie, today announced that she will visit Les Cayes and Port-au-Prince, Haiti, from November 16 to 18, 2016.

This will be the Minister’s first official visit to Haiti, is part of Canada’s humanitarian response to Hurricane Matthew and reflects the partnership between Canada and Haiti.

The Minister will first travel to Les Cayes, a community in Haiti’s Sud department that was severely affected by the hurricane. In addition to seeing the extent of the damage there, the Minister will also meet with the beneficiaries and partners of humanitarian assistance projects supported by the Government of Canada.

During her visit to Port-au-Prince, the Minister will meet with members of the Haitian government and with Canadian and international humanitarian partners who are providing assistance and vital logistical support to help the most vulnerable victims of Hurricane Matthew.

  • On October 4, 2016, Hurricane Matthew hit Haiti, Jamaica, Cuba and the Dominican Republic. Over 2.1 million people were affected by the hurricane in Haiti, and 1.4 million people require humanitarian assistance.
  • Canada announced $6.08 million in humanitarian assistance to meet the needs of those affected by Hurricane Matthew in Haiti.
