Minister Dion to travel to Peru for APEC and bilateral meetings

The Honourable Stéphane Dion, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today announced that he will visit Peru from November 17 to 19, 2016.

Minister Dion will attend the APEC Ministerial Meeting, which will be chaired by Ricardo Luna, Peru’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Eduardo Ferreyros, Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism. The meeting will bring together ministers, senior officials and more than 700 CEOs from the 21 APEC member economies to shape the future of trade and globalization policy.

While in Peru, Minister Dion will visit a Canada-funded project that empowers adolescent girls facing discrimination and violence. He will also meet with experts and civil society organizations on a variety of topics including global efforts to combat climate change, the Peruvian political context and potential reforms to strengthen institutions.

The Canada-Peru relationship is multi-faceted, with strong commercial, political, development and defence links.

    • Canada and Peru’s growing bilateral relations are marked by a commitment to responsible resource management, trade and investment, and cooperation in the areas of development, education, good governance and defence.
    • Omar Alghabra, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Foreign Affairs (Consular Affairs), attended the inauguration of Peru’s President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski in July 2016.
    • Canada last hosted the annual APEC meetings on November 24 and 25, 1997, in Vancouver, British Columbia. It was the fifth time APEC had met and the second time the meetings were held in the Americas.
