The Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today issued the following statement:

“Canada warmly congratulates Louise Arbour on her appointment as the United Nations special representative of the secretary-general for international migration.

“We commend the leadership of António Guterres, the UN Secretary-General, in establishing this important post. Canada looks forward to working with Ms. Arbour as we contribute to international cooperation and as we help address the complex challenges, and harness the benefits, of international migration.

“Given her experience as the chief prosecutor of the international criminal tribunals for the former Yugoslavia and for Rwanda, as the United Nations high commissioner for human rights, and her service as a justice of the Supreme Court of Canada, Ms. Arbour is uniquely qualified for this new position.

“Canada applauds Ms. Arbour for continuing to demonstrate her tireless commitment to working for peace, justice and human rights for all. Her dedication is an inspiration.”
