Minister of Foreign Affairs to attend Women20 Summit in Berlin

As a founding member of the G20, Canada is working closely with partners to achieve gender equality for women in Canada and around the world.

The Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today announced that she will attend the Women20 (W20) Summit, which is being held in Berlin, Germany, from April 24 to 26, 2017.

The W20 Summit brings together more than 100 delegates from all G20 member states and has a focus on women’s economic empowerment.

The Minister will join Angela Merkel, Germany’s Chancellor, Christine Lagarde, Managing Director of the IMF, Queen Máxima of the Netherlands, and other woman leaders for a keynote panel discussion on scaling up women’s entrepreneurship.

The themes of this year’s W20 dialogue include women’s access to the labour market and financial resources, entrepreneurship, closing the digital gender divide and ensuring that gender equality and women’s economic empowerment are at the core of the G20.

  • The W20 is one of the most recent G20 forums; it is focused on reducing the gender employment gap by 25 percent by 2025.

  • In September 2015, the 193 member states of the United Nations adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which includes 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

  • Sustainable Development Goal 5 focuses on providing women and girls with equal access to education, health care, decent work and representation in political and economic decision-making processes that will fuel sustainable economies and benefit societies and humanity at large.

  • Germany holds the G20 presidency in 2017 and will host the Leaders’ Summit in Hamburg on July 7 and 8.
