Parliamentary Secretary Caesar-Chavannes to participate in forums on development financing and disaster risk reduction

News Release

May 22, 2017 - Ottawa, Ontario - Global Affairs Canada

Celina Caesar-Chavannes, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of International Development, is today participating in the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) forum on financing for development in New York City, New York. She will next travel to Cancun, Mexico, to attend the UN’s 2017 Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction from May 24 to 26, 2017.

Parliamentary Secretary Caesar-Chavannes’ participation in the ECOSOC forum is an opportunity for Canada to reiterate its commitment to integrate gender equality into every aspect of development. It is also an opportunity to reconfirm Canada’s support for international efforts to mobilize the financial resources needed to implement the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, particularly to help the poorest and most vulnerable people and support fragile states.

In Mexico, Parliamentary Secretary Caesar-Chavannes, joined by Mark Holland, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, will lead the Canadian delegation to the Global Platform to advance discussions aimed at improving assistance to those most affected by—and most vulnerable to—disasters. Participants will also seek to find practical solutions to the challenge of building resilient communities domestically, regionally and globally.

Quotes

“Gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls are now at the heart of Canada’s international assistance efforts. We are convinced that a feminist approach to development—one that targets gaps and barriers to women’s and girls’ human rights, decision making and access to and control over resources—is the best approach to reducing poverty and inequality.”

- Celina Caesar-Chavannes, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of International Development

“Canada is pleased to join other countries at the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction. Cancun gives us an opportunity to share Canada’s knowledge, experiences and lessons learned and to learn from others so that we can make our commitments more resilient. These collaborative efforts mirror the work on our own soil planned for later this week during the Meeting of Federal-Provincial-Territorial Ministers Responsible for Emergency Management in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador.”

- Mark Holland, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness
