Canada supports promotion of international peace and conflict resolution

Canada is actively engaged in supporting international peace and stability to help people affected by conflicts and crises worldwide.

The Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today concluded her participation at the Oslo Forum in Norway and announced a comprehensive package of initiatives totalling $22.6 million to advance international peace. These initiatives will increase and improve women’s participation in peace processes and foster inclusive dialogue.

At the forum, the Minister took part in a panel discussion regarding the “UN, great power politics and peacemaking” and presented Canada’s views on these issues. The Minister also met with several of her counterparts to discuss peace, stability and security priorities.

Quick Facts

  • The Oslo Forum is organized every year by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in collaboration with the Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue. It is Minister Freeland’s first attendance at the Oslo Forum.

  • On August 26, 2016, the Government of Canada announced the launch of Global Affairs Canada’s new Peace and Stabilization Operations Program (PSOPs) initiative. For the 2016 to 2019 period, the program has a budget of $450 million. Through PSOPs, Canada is working with allies and partners to stop violent conflict, provide security and create space for dialogue and conflict resolution.

  • The projects announced today are funded through PSOPs and are destined for Syria, Ukraine, South Sudan, Cyprus, the Philippines, Mali, Colombia and Venezuela.

  • Since it was launched, PSOPs has delivered more than $200 million in peace and stabilization programming.
