Canada deeply concerned by decision to expel International Commission against Impunity in Guatemala Commissioner

Statements

August 28, 2017 - Ottawa, Ontario - Global Affairs Canada

Global Affairs Canada today issued the following statement:

“Canada is deeply concerned by the Government of Guatemala’s decision to expel the International Commission against Impunity in Guatemala (CICIG) Commissioner, Iván Velásquez.

“Canada is a major donor to the CICIG and greatly appreciates the work of the Commission under the leadership of Iván Velásquez and in cooperation with the Office of the Attorney General of Guatemala. The results that the CICIG has been able to achieve demonstrate to the region and the world that it is possible to strengthen judicial institutions and that the rule of law can prevail.

“Canada is concerned that the decision to remove the CICIG Commissioner undermines the Commission’s mandate and its ability to investigate corruption and impunity.

“Canada remains committed to working with Guatemala and other partners to support inclusive and accountable governance in the country and will continue to monitor the evolving situation.”
