Famine Relief Fund final tally demonstrates generosity of Canadians

News Release

August 17, 2017 - Ottawa, Ontario - Global Affairs Canada

In response to humanitarian crises, including an unprecedented famine, food insecurity and conflict-induced displacements, affecting over 55 million people in Yemen and countries across Africa, including Nigeria, Somalia and South Sudan, Canadians generously donated over $21.3 million to registered Canadian charities between March 17 and June 30, 2017.

As announced by the Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister of International Development and La Francophonie, on May 29, 2017, for every eligible donation made by individuals to registered Canadian charities, the Government of Canada will contribute an equivalent amount to the Famine Relief Fund.

Canada’s contribution will be allocated to experienced Canadian non-governmental organizations that will provide life-saving humanitarian assistance to the millions of people affected by drought, conflict and cholera outbreaks.

Canada is recognized as a leader in providing humanitarian assistance to those affected by conflict and natural disasters, and will continue to support principled, timely and needs-based humanitarian action to save lives, alleviate suffering and support the dignity of those affected.
