Canada’s additional humanitarian assistance in Bangladesh

Backgrounder

Canada’s announcement of funding of $2.55 million will help partners to provide life-saving assistance to people seeking refuge in Bangladesh from the violence in Myanmar’s northern Rakhine state.

UN organizations receiving funding and details of the funded work follow.

The World Food Programme ($1 million)

Canada’s support will help the World Food Programme provide food assistance to displaced persons, as well as therapeutic feeding to pregnant women and to children under five years old. The WFP also distributes fortified biscuits to new arrivals.

The United Nations Population Fund ($1 million)

Canada’s support will help the United Nations Population Fund deliver clinical care and psychosocial counselling for sexual and gender-based violence survivors, identify high-risk areas and factors driving gender-based violence (GBV), procure and distribute dignity kits and expand the reach of, and access to, life-saving GBV prevention and response services. This funding will also support the provision of emergency obstetric and newborn care.

UNICEF ($550,000)

Canada’s support will help UNICEF prevent child exploitation and abuse, by establishing child-friendly spaces, and provide psychosocial support for children. UNICEF will also coordinate the distribution of hygiene kits and water purification tablets and build gender-segregated latrines and bathing cubicles.
