Statement by Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs in response to North Korea’s firing of a ballistic missile over Japan

Statements

September 15 - Ottawa, Canada - Global Affairs Canada

The Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today issues the following statement in response to North Korea’s firing of a ballistic missile over Japan:

“Canada is gravely concerned by the escalating aggressive behaviour demonstrated by North Korea’s‎ leadership.

“We condemn in the strongest terms North Korea’s launch of a ballistic missile over Japan – a deliberate and reckless action intended to provoke and to threaten regional and global security.

“Canada calls on North Korea to fully comply with its international obligations, cease its pattern of illegal and destabilizing actions, and immediately and verifiably abandon its nuclear weapons and ballistic missile program.

“We fully support regional and international efforts to find multilateral solutions to this threat to international peace and security, and remain unwavering in our support for Japan, South Korea and other partners in the region.”
