Statement by Minister Bibeau on International Day for the Eradication of Poverty
Statements
October 17, 2017 - Ottawa, Ontario - Global Affairs Canada
The Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister of International Development and La Francophonie, today issued the following statement:
“This year, as we mark the 25th anniversary of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, global development partners are accelerating their efforts to end poverty. The 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) provide a universal vision for a more sustainable, inclusive, peaceful and prosperous world. Canada is fully committed to implementing this vision at home and abroad.
“Canada’s new Feminist International Assistance Policy is closely aligned with this year’s theme of ‘Answering the call of October 17 to end poverty: A path toward peaceful and inclusive societies’. Our policy recognizes that investing in gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls is the most effective way to reduce—and, eventually, eradicate—poverty.
“We all have a role to play in securing a more prosperous and sustainable future for everyone, including women and girls. That is why over the next five years, 95% of Canada’s bilateral international development assistance will go to initiatives that directly target or integrate gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls. That is also why we are supporting local women’s organizations through the $150-million Women’s Voice and Leadership Program.
“To end poverty, we will need to think, work, finance and deliver development differently. Together with our partners at home and abroad, Canada is seizing this opportunity for collaboration to ensure that no one is left behind.”
