Statement by Minister Bibeau on International Day of the Girl
October 11, 2017 - Ottawa, Ontario - Global Affairs Canada
The Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister of International Development and La Francophonie, today issued the following statement:
“On this International Day of the Girl, I want to speak to girls in Canada and around the world—especially those of you living in the aftermath of natural disasters or in conflict zones, refugee camps, or other challenging settings.
“Canada wants to work with you to build a more peaceful, prosperous and inclusive world. There are challenges, of course: early and forced marriage, lack of access to quality education and nutrition, and sexual and gender-based violence, to name just a few. But despite these challenges, I have had the privilege of seeing your resilience and potential in action over and over again in my travels.
“Canada is working on all of these fronts with girls like you. Our investments in sexual and reproductive health and rights, for example, aim to ensure that all girls—including those of you living in humanitarian and fragile settings—have access to the full range of services and information you need to thrive.
“Girls, it is with your strength and your passion that we will implement our new Feminist International Assistance Policy to reduce poverty and advance gender equality. With you on our side, we cannot fail.
“This year, some Canadian girls will have the chance to work in their dream jobs for a day—to show that girls belong anywhere their hearts desire. Girls in Canada and all over the world: it will be your turn next—and not just for a day. You belong here. You belong everywhere. Stand up, raise your voices and take your places. Because when you do, we all benefit.”
