Statements

November 23, 2017 - Ottawa, Ontario - Global Affairs Canada

The Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today issued the following statement on reports related to African migrants being sold in Libya as slaves:

“Canada is deeply concerned by recent reports of African migrants being sold in Libya as slaves. We echo the United Nations’ call for an investigation into the allegations, and we support and encourage related efforts by Libya’s Government of National Accord. We further call on the appropriate authorities to bring the perpetrators to justice.

“Recognizing the international community’s shared responsibility to unite in the fight against slavery and smuggling of migrants, Canada urges all countries to join, ratify, effectively implement and respect the United Nations Protocol to Prevent, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons, Especially Women and Children.

“We remain concerned with the regional migrant situation and human trafficking and condemn all forms of slavery.”
