Statement by Minister of Foreign Affairs on International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists

Statements

November 2, 2017 - Ottawa, Ontario - Global Affairs Canada

The Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today issued the following statement:

“Even at its most basic, journalism is demanding work that requires instinct, determination and a commitment to getting the story right. Too often, it can also be dangerous and even life-threatening. Members of the media who use their platform to criticize authority figures, report on criminal activity or simply speak the truth often put themselves at great risk as they pursue the public interest.

“According to the Committee to Protect Journalists, 79 reporters and media workers were killed while on the job in 2016, and another 259 were in prison around the world. Attempts to intimidate or silence journalists—through censorship, persecution or imprisonment—are an attack on the freedom of expression of all individuals and a direct assault on democracy itself.

“On this International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists, Canada calls for accountability for those who intimidate or attack members of the media and applauds the courage of all those who continue to share their stories despite the threats they face.”
