Canada is encouraged by reopening of talks between North Korea and South Korea

Statements

January 9, 2018 - Ottawa, Ontario - Global Affairs Canada

The Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today issued the following statement on diplomatic talks between North Korea and South Korea:

“Canada is encouraged by the reopening of talks between North Korea and South Korea and the meeting held earlier today to discuss Olympic cooperation and easing military tensions. We welcome efforts to involve North Korea in the 2018 Winter Olympics.

“Canada believes that a diplomatic solution to the North Korea crisis is essential and possible. We fully support regional and international efforts to address this pressing international security threat, including through sanctions that exert pressure on North Korea to abandon its nuclear and ballistic missile programs verifiably and irreversibly.

“In a demonstration of solidarity in opposition to North Korea’s dangerous and illegal actions, next week Canada and the United States will co-host a meeting of foreign ministers from across the globe to work together to achieve stringent sanctions implementation, as well as to strengthen diplomatic efforts toward a secure, prosperous and denuclearized Korean peninsula.”
