Parliamentary Secretary attends conference on governance and decentralization in Iraq

Omar Alghabra, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, today participated in a conference in Baghdad, Iraq, entitled Governance and Decentralization in Iraq: The Road to National Reconciliation and Development, hosted by the Institute on Governance. The conference focused on developing and sustaining a successful decentralized federal system of government in Iraq.
During his visit, Parliamentary Secretary Alghabra had the opportunity to interact with Iraqi ministers, parliamentarians, provincial officials, civil society representatives, academics and youth. The Parliamentary Secretary also delivered remarks on Canada’s experience with federalism.
The conference offered a distinct opportunity to raise and advance core Canadian values, including human rights, inclusion, gender equality, and respect for diversity, democratic governance, peaceful pluralism, and the rule of law.

The international conference on governance and decentralization is a component of the Fiscal Decentralization and Resiliency-Building for Iraq project, which is funded by the Government of Canada’s bilateral development program for Iraq and is being implemented by the Institute on Governance.
