Foreign Affairs Minister to travel to Paris and Geneva

Canada is committed to international engagement and the protection and promotion of human rights in Canada and around the world.  

The Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Minister of Foreign Affairs, will travel to Paris, France, on February 26, 2018, and to Geneva, Switzerland, from February 27 to 28, 2018.

While in Paris, the Minister will meet with Jean-Yves Le Drian, Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, to discuss issues of mutual concern, such as international security, human rights, climate change and the international rules-based order.

In Geneva, the Minister will address the Conference on Disarmament and discuss nuclear disarmament, landmines and Canada’s arms exports regime.

She will then convene a panel discussion on diversity and inclusion, which will touch on the rights of LGBTQ2 people, women and girls, and refugees.

Finally, she will address the United Nations Human Rights Council to highlight Canada’s strong commitment to protecting human rights and Canada’s concrete efforts to promote these rights on the world stage.

  • The UN Human Rights Council is an inter-governmental body within the United Nations system responsible for strengthening the promotion and protection of human rights around the globe and for addressing situations of human rights violations. This will be Minister Freeland’s first time at the UN Human Rights Council.
