Youth internship projects offer great opportunities for young Canadians to acquire work experience abroad and to help them become truly engaged global citizens.
The Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister of International Development and La Francophonie, today announced $2 million in funding to the Carrefour de Solidarité Internationale de Sherbrooke [international solidarity centre in Sherbrooke] (CSI), Quebec, for its project under the International Youth Internship Program (IYIP).
With this funding, the CSI will offer 112 internships in four countries: Haiti, Nicaragua, Peru and Senegal. Most of these internships will focus on projects promoting democracy and gender equality. The other internships will focus on environmentally friendly economic and rural development and on food security.
The IYIP aims to strengthen the professional, interpersonal and intercultural skills of young Canadians, as well as their understanding of international development. It gives them tools to integrate more easily into the labour market. This program demonstrates the Government of Canada’s ongoing commitment to addressing youth unemployment and skills development while advancing the priorities of Canada’s new Feminist International Assistance Policy.
